How to Elope in Lanzarote

If you're wondering how to elope in Lanzarote, the good news is that it can be wonderfully simple. In fact, one of the things couples tell me most often is that they wish they'd done it sooner.

I'm Sarah, The Lanzarote Celebrant, and I help couples create relaxed, meaningful and personal elopement ceremonies across this beautiful island.

Whether it's just the two of you, or perhaps a couple of witnesses, here's everything you need to know.

Why Elope in Lanzarote?

Lanzarote has a magic about it.

Year-round sunshine, dramatic volcanic landscapes, beautiful beaches, stunning sunsets and a relaxed atmosphere that instantly makes people slow down and enjoy the moment.

It's also incredibly accessible, with direct flights from across the UK and Ireland.

Most importantly, it gives you the freedom to focus on what your wedding day is really about.

The two of you.

No pressure. No expectations. No complicated logistics.

Just your love story.

Is It Legal to Elope in Lanzarote?

Your legal marriage paperwork is usually completed at home before or after your trip, (or never if you wish!)

Most couples choose to have a symbolic ceremony in Lanzarote, which gives complete freedom over location, timing and content.

The best part?

You can have your ceremony almost anywhere suitable, without being restricted to traditional venues.

The Most Popular Elopement Locations in Lanzarote

One of the first questions couples ask me is:

"Where can we have our ceremony?"

The answer is almost anywhere beautiful.

Sunset Beach Ceremony

This is by far the most popular choice.

Imagine standing barefoot in the sand as the sun begins to dip towards the horizon, with the sound of the waves behind you and nobody else that matters in the world.

It is romantic, relaxed and quintessentially Lanzarote.

There are a few restrictions and considerations when it comes to beach ceremonies, which I explain during a quick video call, but for many couples it's exactly what they've been dreaming of.

Your Private Villa Terrace

This is often my personal favourite.

A private villa gives you complete privacy and flexibility.

No spectators.

No interruptions.

Just the two of you overlooking the ocean, the mountains or your villa pool.

Many couples follow the ceremony with a private chef, champagne and a sunset dinner together.

Perfect.

A Vineyard Ceremony

Lanzarote's vineyards are unlike anywhere else in the world.

The volcanic landscape creates a dramatic and unique backdrop that photographs beautifully.

For couples looking for something distinctly Lanzarote, this option is always worth considering.

A Ceremony at Sea

Yes, you can get married on a boat.

Imagine exchanging vows while sailing along the coastline, with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out around you.

It's relaxed, adventurous and a little bit different.

Unique Locations

One of the advantages of an elopement is flexibility.

If you have somewhere meaningful in mind, let's talk.

Volcanic viewpoints, private properties, hidden corners of the island and other unique locations can often work beautifully, provided we have the necessary permissions where required.

What Does an Elopement Ceremony Look Like?

Whatever you want it to look like.

Some couples want something simple and intimate.

Others want music, personal vows, symbolic rituals and all the emotion of a traditional wedding ceremony.

My role is to create a ceremony that feels like you.

Not a generic script.

Not something copied from the internet.

A ceremony built around your story, your personalities and your relationship.

There are usually tears.

There is almost always laughter.

And there are often a few surprises along the way.

"We Were Worried It Might Feel Awkward..."

One of the biggest concerns couples have is:

"Will it feel strange with just the two of us?"

The answer is almost always no.

In fact, couples are often surprised by how natural it feels.

One recent couple left this lovely review:

"We eloped recently and Sarah performed our ceremony, we were worried with just my partner and I it may feel awkward but Sarah made it so natural and relaxed, she was amazing from beginning to end and the ceremony she wrote us was like she had known us for years, we really could not have asked for more and could not recommend her more. See you in 10 years for a vow renewal!"

The funny thing is, they didn't wait 10 years.

Less than two years later they contacted me again wanting to come back to Lanzarote with all their family and their new baby daughter to have the wedding celebration they never had.

At this rate I might end up doing the elopement, the wedding and the vow renewal!

And honestly, I'd be delighted to.
