Why Your Best Friend Probably Shouldn't Conduct Your Wedding (Even If They're Brilliant)

"We've asked our best friend (uncle, cousin,....)

to conduct our ceremony."

It's something I hear quite often.

There is something incredibly touching about asking someone who knows you so well to play such an important role in your wedding. It feels personal. Meaningful. Authentic.

And perhaps they're a fantastic public speaker. Maybe they're an actor, a teacher, or the life and soul of every party.

But here's something worth considering...

Being able to speak in public and being able to conduct a wedding ceremony are two very different things.

Even the professionals get nervous

Actors do.

Singers do.

Presenters do.

Professional celebrants do too.

The difference is that we've learned how to channel those nerves into creating a calm experience for everyone else.

Now imagine your best friend.

They're not just speaking in front of 80 guests. They're looking at two people they love, trying not to cry, hoping they don't forget their lines, worrying about getting your names wrong, wondering where they're supposed to stand and desperately hoping the microphone works, amongst a dozen other things.

That's quite a lot to carry.

A wedding ceremony is like a live theatre production

Most guests only see one person speaking at the front.

A professional celebrant sees everything else.

Long before your guests arrive, we've usually spoken with:

* the wedding planner

* the venue

* the sound technician

* the photographer

* the videographer

* the musicians

Everyone knows the plan.

Everyone knows the cues.

Everyone knows what's happening next.

Your celebrant is quietly conducting the entire performance without anyone noticing.

We know when to disappear

One of the biggest differences?

The photographs.

There are certain moments where your photographer wants a completely unobstructed shot.

The first kiss.

The ring exchange.

That look you give each other after you've just been announced as newlyweds.

A professional celebrant instinctively steps aside at exactly the right moment.

Not because someone tells us.

Because we've done it hundreds of times.

Your friend may be concentrating so hard on remembering what comes next that they accidentally become the main feature in your wedding album.

We're guiding you without you even realising

Wedding ceremonies are emotional.

Hands shake.

People forget where to stand.

Bouquets end up in the wrong hand.

Couples suddenly have no idea where to look.

A professional celebrant gently guides all of this.

A tiny step to the left.

A quiet reminder to face each other.

Holding for just a couple of seconds longer so the photographer gets the perfect shot.

Making sure everyone can see.

Helping you breathe.

No fuss.

No embarrassment.

Just quiet confidence.

And then there are all the things nobody plans for.

The couple's baby decides now is the perfect moment to cry through the vows. Grandma has been sitting in the Lanzarote sunshine a little too long and is quietly beginning to wilt. The groom becomes so overwhelmed with emotion he suddenly needs a tissue... or a glass of water. The rings aren't where they're supposed to be. The handwritten vows have mysteriously vanished. A rain cloud is moving in far quicker than expected. The beautiful glass ceremony decor shatters moments before the ceremony begins. Or, just as you're about to welcome everyone, the microphone decides it's taking the afternoon off.

Most couples never notice these little dramas unfolding. An experienced celebrant does. We've seen them all before, and we've learned to adapt quickly, calmly and with a smile. For us, they're simply part of the job - and most of the time, no one ever realises there was a problem at all.

We're looking everywhere else

Whilst you're concentrating on each other...

We're noticing:

* Is Grandma comfortable?

* Is the aisle wide enough?

* Is someone about to trip over the floral arrangement?

* Has the wind blown the signing table away?

* Is a toddler reaching the point of no return?

If there are young children attending, I've often already spoken to their parents beforehand.

Not because I expect problems.

But because having a discreet exit plan means everyone stays relaxed if little ones suddenly decide they've had enough.

These are tiny details.

Until they're not.

Then there's the ceremony itself...

Writing a ceremony isn't simply filling in a questionnaire.

It's creating something that feels like you.

The right balance of humour.

The right amount of emotion.

The right pacing.

The right length.

Your wedding day runs to a timetable.

Too short and guests are left wondering if that's it.

Too long and people begin checking their watches.

A professional celebrant understands how to build a ceremony that flows naturally, keeps guests engaged and creates those moments people remember years later.

We've all sat through that ceremony...

You know the one.

The one that seemed to last forever.

The one where nobody laughed.

The one where nobody quite knew when to clap.

Afterwards everyone politely says,

"It was lovely."

Because no one is going to tell a bride and groom that the ceremony was awkward.

And they certainly aren't going to tell your best friend they weren't very good.

A celebrant sets the tone for the entire day

Your ceremony is the first chapter of your wedding.

It tells your guests what sort of day they're about to enjoy.

Warm.

Relaxed.

Funny.

Emotional.

Elegant.

Joyful.

Everything that follows builds from those first thirty minutes.

One final thought

A professional celebrant is one of the key suppliers you'll book.

We're entrusted with one of the biggest responsibility of the day.

We introduce your story.

We calm your nerves.

We guide your guests.

We coordinate with your suppliers.

We keep everything flowing.

We create the moment you've imagined for months - perhaps years.

Your best friend?

Invite them to give a reading.

Ask them to make a speech.

Have them by your side.

Let them enjoy the day with you rather than carrying the weight of making it happen.

Because the greatest gift they can give you isn't conducting your ceremony.

It's being fully present to witness it.
